Arbidol®: active substance and its mechanism of action

Only in the 20th century did three flu pandemics pass. The most famous of them - "Spaniard" - in the years 1918-1919 claimed the lives of 20-50 million people. It is not surprising that scientists from all countries were thrown into the search for a reliable remedy against influenza. In 1974, the drug Arbidol® was created at the All-Union Scientific Research Chemical-Pharmaceutical Institute (VNIHFI). Clinical studies continued for another 14 years, and as a result, by order of the Ministry of Health of the USSR dated March 23, 1988 No. 229, the drug was allowed to be used for the prevention and treatment of influenza in adults and children.

Fig. 1. Influenza virus replication cycle

The active substance of Arbidol® is umifenovir (Umifenovir) - has a direct antiviral effect and is included in the WHO classifier under its own code J05AX13 (group J05A - direct-acting antivirals).

To understand how the drug works, you need to know what a virus is. Unlike bacteria, independent living organisms, albeit unicellular, the virus is an "inferior" creature. Strictly speaking, he is not even “living”: he does not have a cellular structure and, more importantly, is unable to reproduce himself. In order to multiply, the virus needs to connect with the membrane of a living organism’s cell, integrate its genetic material into the cell’s genome - and then the cell, instead of the substances it needs, starts to reproduce the virus particles that are assembled in a certain order, much like in the designer for kids, when it’s not easy to connect the parts impossible.

Umifenovir blocks a special component of the envelope of the virus - hemagglutinin, which is responsible for the penetration of the gene substance of the virus into cellular structures. That is, it blocks the earliest stage of the development of infection - it does not allow the virus to connect to the cell membrane and launch its genetic material into the human cell.

Since Arbidol® only interacts with particles of the virus, its effect is stable and does not depend on the immune status, general condition of the body, or the like. There were no cases of virus resistance to the drug.

Composition and form of release

The active ingredient in the drug is umifenovir. This substance exhibits antiviral and immunomodulating properties. The chemical composition of the tablets includes starch, povidone, calcium stearate, croscarmellose, titanium dioxide and other components that stabilize the dosage form. The dense membrane helps to break down the drug in the right section of the gastrointestinal tract.

Arbidol capsules

Arbidol is made in the form of powder, tablets and capsules. The technology for the production of different dosage forms is the same. Only the concentration of the active ingredient is different.

Arbidol action

Umifenovir is registered in the list of drugs as an antiviral and immunomodulating agent. After swallowing, the tablet is resorbable in the intestines. The components of the drug penetrate the bloodstream and spread to the tissues. Umifenovir has been shown to be effective against influenza A and B viruses. Arbidol also fights against other pathogens of acute respiratory infections. The therapeutic effect of the drug depends on the severity of the patient's condition and the prescribed dosage.
Viral infection begins with infection of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. The infectious agent along with saliva enters the integumentary tissues and penetrates the cell. Viral particles gradually accumulate: new pathogens are released into the surrounding tissues and quickly spread in the body. Umifenovir prevents the fusion of viral particles with cells, so that the development of the infectious process stops.

Other properties

  • Improving the immunity. The body's protective system needs special substances to fight the infection. In response to viral invasion, leukocytes and other cells secrete interferons that prevent the propagation of pathogens. Umifenovir is an external inducer of interferon. With this medication, prevention can be done.
  • Antioxidant effect. Any disease weakens the protective properties of tissues. Dangerous forms of oxygen begin to damage healthy cells, which makes the symptoms of the disease worse. Antioxidants strengthen cell membranes.
  • Cleansing the body of toxins. Harmful substances enter the bloodstream after the destruction of viral particles. The drug significantly reduces the number of viruses and relieves intoxication symptoms.
  • Reducing the likelihood of complications. Incorrect treatment of acute respiratory viral infections leads to the appearance of a bacterial infection. The use of antiviral drugs helps protect organs from other pathogens.
  • Reducing the duration of rehabilitation. Often after recovery, symptoms of weakness and fatigue persist. Umifenovir intake quickly restores the body's resources.

Antiviral medications rarely speed recovery. The main goal is to eliminate the symptoms.

Adverse reactions

The active component of the drug rarely causes side effects. This non-toxic substance improves the condition of tissues during illness. Only minor complaints are possible.
Rare side effects during treatment:

The tool should be prescribed by a doctor

  • Headache.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Allergic reaction.

Intolerance to the drug component is the most serious complication. If rashes appear on the skin during therapy, stop taking the pills and consult a doctor.

How to take Arbidol®?

The drug has several forms of release intended for different ages:

  • powder for suspension in bottles of 37 g - from two years of age (registration certificate in the State Registration Service: ЛП 003117-290715 dated August 12, 2016),
  • 50 mg tablets No. 10 and No. 20 - for children from three years of age (registration certificate in the State Registration Service: LSR-003117 of December 21, 2017),
  • 100 mg capsules - for children from six years of age (registration certificate in the State Registration Service: P N003610 / 01-191017 of December 26, 2017),
  • 200 mg capsules - for children from 12 years of age (registration certificate in the radar control system: ЛП 002690-141117 of January 19, 2018).

Thus, a single dose is:

  • for children from two to six years - 50 mg (or 10 ml of suspension),
  • for children from six to 12 years old - 100 mg (or 20 ml of suspension),
  • for children over 12 years old and adults - 200 mg (40 ml of suspension or 2 capsules of 100 mg).

The frequency, duration and frequency of administration will depend on purposes of using the drug:

  • For the prevention of infection during the epidemic - a single dose twice a week for 3 weeks.
  • For the prevention of infection after contact with the patient (if someone in the family or at work is definitely sick) - one single dose per day for 10-14 days.
  • For the treatment of acute respiratory viral infections and influenza without complications - a single dose every 6 hours 5 days.
  • For the treatment of complicated SARS and influenza - a single dose every 6 hours for 5 days, then one dose once a week for 4 consecutive weeks.
  • For the treatment of rotavirus intestinal infections - a single dose every 6 hours for 5 days.

Are there any other direct-acting antiviral drugs?

The group of direct-acting antiviral agents also includes other drugs. Of these, for the fight against influenza, in addition to Arbidol®, the following active substances are intended:

WHO experts believe that most viruses have managed to adapt to rimantadine and have lost sensitivity to it, so it is not recommended to use it to treat seasonal flu.

As for zanamivir and oseltamivir, these are effective agents that remain active against the influenza virus. But the preparations containing them have potential side effects that occur with different frequencies and severity in different groups of patients.

Possible unwanted effects of zanamivir:

  • cramps
  • confusion,
  • hallucinations (especially in children and adolescents),
  • arrhythmia,
  • fainting.

Probable unwanted effects of oseltamivir:

  • nausea and vomiting,
  • diarrhea,
  • abdominal pain,
  • dizziness,
  • headache,
  • insomnia.

There is another caveat: rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir are intended for the prevention and treatment of only influenza, but not SARS and not enterovirus infection.

At what age is allowed to take?

Arbidol in liquid form is contraindicated for children in the first two years of life. At the same time, in children over 2 years old, the instruction recommends treating with this tool flu, rotavirus infection or SARS. In case of SARS infection, the drug is used to treat children over 12 years old, and for prophylactic purposes - in children over 6 years old.

Solid forms of Arbidol are allowed for children over three years of age, provided that the baby can swallow them without problems. If there is a problem with this, at the age of 3 years and older continue to give the child a medicine in suspension. The drug Arbidol Maximum due to the increased dosage is given to children only from the age of 12.

Main indications

  • Flu. This pathology is manifested by fever, cough, headache, chills, weakness and other unpleasant symptoms. The gates of infection are the mucous membrane of the throat. Gradually, pathogens spread throughout the body.
  • Other acute respiratory viral infections: bronchitis, tracheitis, pharyngitis and pneumonia.
  • Complications of viral pathologies. We are talking about bacterial and fungal infections.
  • Intestinal flu. Symptoms of the pathology include diarrhea, flatulence, fever and abdominal pain.
  • Chronic cold sores. Herpetic infection is resistant to the main types of treatment.Arbidol reduces the risk of relapse.
  • Congenital or acquired immunodeficiency, characterized by a high risk of acute respiratory viral infections.

Umifenovir is also used as a preventative measure. This is the drug of choice for the prevention of seasonal respiratory infections. Sometimes the medicine is used in the postoperative period to prevent infectious complications.

“Arbidol”: instructions for use for children with dosages by age, analogues of the drug

When a child has signs of a viral infection, mothers try to give an antiviral agent as soon as possible: it will help the body in the fight against the disease. One such drug is Arbidol for children. The attitude of parents to him is ambiguous: someone tries to use the medicine more quickly, while others do not consider treatment with tablets and syrup necessary. In fact, Arbidol is allowed even by the smallest, since it has practically no contraindications and side effects. Detailed instructions will help parents dispel fears regarding Arbidol.

Opinion of parents

On the Internet you can find both positive and negative reviews about the antiviral agent. Parents like that the medication is available in several forms of release, which allows you to choose the most suitable. They note that if you drink Arbidol for prevention, you can not get sick and the signs of infection with it disappear faster.

Negative reviews are due to the fact that the medication can cause allergies. Parents do not like that even though the suspension itself tastes good, after it remains a bitter aftertaste. And not every baby can swallow capsules and tablets.

Properties, composition and release forms of the drug

Arbidol is an antiviral drug. It provokes the production of the natural protein responsible for the fight against viruses - interferon. Its action is to neutralize as many hostile cells as possible and develop immunity to infection. Children's Arbidol stimulates the activity of magrophages - defensive cells. The task of the drug is to prevent the sedimentation of harmful microbes on healthy tissues.

As a result of treatment with Arbidol, the cycle of viral diseases decreases in the child, the healing process proceeds faster, the immune system is gaining strength, the body's intoxication is reduced to zero. The drug promotes the formation of a specific film in cell membranes, which makes them less vulnerable to viruses.

On the pharmacy shelves, Arbidol for children is represented by two main forms of release:

  • 50, 100, 200 mg tablets are dragees of white or cream color. Available in blister plates laid in a cardboard box.In the box is from 10 to 30 tablets.
  • Powder for the preparation of a suspension, in the composition of which small granules of white or cream color. The prepared suspension has a pleasant fruity aroma and the taste of a banana or cherry. The undiluted drug mixture is in a dark glass container placed in a cardboard box. The kit contains a measuring spoon and instructions for using the drug. The dosage of the active substance in 5 ml of the prepared syrup is 25 mg.

Arbidol capsules of 50 mg and 100 mg of the active ingredient are put into production. Available in packs of 10, 20, 30, 40 pieces. Since capsules cannot be chewed, this form is not suitable for children under 3 years old. For children under the specified age, it is ideal to use a suspension.

The main active substance of Arbidol is umifenovir hydrochloride. For each form, additional substances are used:

  • hypermelosis
  • titanium dioxide

How does it affect the body? (Pharmacodynamics)

The drug, due to the main component, has an antiviral and immunostimulating effect on the body:

  • suppresses influenza viruses of forms A and B, as well as viruses of acute respiratory diseases. The virus multiplies in the body using its living cells. It contains a special protein called hemaglutinin. With its help, the virus sticks to the cell membrane. Once the virus has attached, the cell membrane envelops it on all sides, creating an endosome (bubble) that penetrates into the cell. There, the virus calmly gets to the apparatus that synthesizes RNA, forcing the cell to reproduce proteins and RNA for new viruses. The active component of the drug begins to act when the virus has attached to the cell, an endosome has formed around it. At this stage, it blocks the work of hemagglutinin, preventing the virus from entering the cell. So the spread of infection stops, new virus particles are not synthesized, old ones die.
  • Stimulates the work of your own immune system: increases the number of T-lymphocytes, especially killers and helpers.
  • increases the activity of macrophages, the amount of synthesized interferons.
  • reduces the duration of the disease by 1 - 2 days, reduces the number of viral bodies in the blood, and not only alleviates the symptoms of the disease.

Opinion of Dr. Komarovsky

A well-known pediatrician believes that Arbidol refers to medicines with unproven effectiveness.

Despite the fact that an antiviral agent can be purchased without a prescription, only a doctor must decide how to drink Arbidol to a child.

Name: Huseynova Natalya Aleksandrovna. She graduated from the pharmaceutical faculty of KSMU. Work experience in a pharmacy is 13 years.

Instructions for use Arbidol

At the pharmacy you can purchase a package of medicines for adults or children. The concentration of the active substance in one tablet varies. Children are shown the minimum doses of umifenovir, which do not cause complications. Before using the drug, you must consult your doctor. The specialist assesses the severity of the patient's condition, studies the anamnesis and conducts the necessary examinations. Only after diagnosis can the correct regimen of drug therapy be selected. Self-medication leads to adverse effects.

Adult use patterns

  • Emergency prophylaxis after contact with a patient with SARS: daily intake of 200 mg of the drug for two weeks.
  • Prevention of recurrence of herpes infection: taking 200 mg of the drug every two days for 3 weeks.
  • Prevention of bacterial and viral complications of the operation: taking 200 mg of the drug 48 hours before the intervention. Then, taking a similar dose on the 2nd and 5th day after treatment.
  • Prevention of bronchitis, pharyngitis and laryngitis: 200 mg of Arbidol every two days for 3 weeks.
  • ARVI treatment: four-time intake of 200 mg of the drug every day for 5 days. If complications of infection form, it is necessary to continue the course with 200 mg once a week for a month.
  • Recurrent herpes: 200 mg four times a day for a week. After that, take a similar dose twice a week for a month.
  • Intestinal flu: 200 mg four times a day for a week.

Important! Arbidol is rarely prescribed as monotherapy. It is recommended to consult a doctor for the appointment of complex drug therapy.

An individual choice of the scheme for using medicines is possible. The specialist should focus on the patient's condition.

For children under 12 years old

The use of the drug in pediatric practice is different. Children are prescribed tablets containing 50 or 100 mg of the active substance. A decrease in the concentration of umifenovir makes treatment safer.

Used therapy regimens:

  • ARVI prevention for children from 2 to 6 years: daily intake of 50 mg of the drug for two weeks.
  • ARVI prevention for children from 6 to 12 years: daily intake of 100 mg of the drug for two weeks.

If treatment for a respiratory infection is required, children should be given 4 tablets per day for five days. 50 mg for children under 6 years of age and 100 mg for children under 12 years of age.

Additional information

  • Capsules or tablets should be swallowed whole and washed down with water. Other drinks are not recommended.
  • It is necessary to take medicine before eating.
  • The drug is compatible with other medicines.
  • If during the treatment the symptoms of the infectious process do not disappear, you must immediately make an appointment with the doctor.

Arbidol does not affect the rate of psychomotor reactions. During treatment, you can drive a vehicle.

Reviews and prices

The drug has mixed reviews. Not all studies confirm the effectiveness of the active substance. The tool is used only in domestic practice. The unique advantage of Arbidol can be considered good tolerability. According to doctors, the effects of treatment occur only with the timely intake of pills.

The average price of a package of children's products for 40 tablets (100 mg) is 750 rubles. The average packaging price of an adult drug per 10 tablets (200 mg) is 500 rubles.

How and after how long does the drug work

Arbidol has antiviral, anti-toxic, antioxidant and immunomodulating effects.

Antiviral effect characterized by the ability of the drug to combine with the hemagglutinin protein in the envelope of the virus.

Thanks to hemagglutinin, the virus combines with tissues, organs and causes the development of inflammatory and infectious processes.

Viruses enter the body systems and cause unpleasant symptoms - a runny nose, headache, otitis media, sore throat, body aches, weakness, chills, and an increase in body temperature.

Arbidol blocks protein, due to which the virus ceases to multiply and dies. The drug counteracts the development of infectious and inflammatory processes, blocking viruses with lightning speed that penetrated even the mucous membranes.

Arbidol is also able to relieve colds a few hours after the first dose and ease the course of the disease.

Immunomodulatory effect of the drug characterized by the activation of phagocytes and the destruction of viruses, increased release of interferons, responsible for the response of the immune system to viral penetration.

The drug is also capable:

  • reduce the risk of developing diseases during seasonal epidemics (influenza, SARS),
  • reduce the frequency of exacerbations of colds,
  • make the course of the disease easy and almost asymptomatic,
  • reduce the risk of complications
  • cure rotavirus infections in children.

Anti-toxic effect of Arbidol consists in easing the symptoms of intoxication - weakness, dizziness, headache, chills, etc.

Reviews about Arbidol

Reviews about Arbidol can be found very different, but for the most part they are positive.

Positive reviews are left by patients who took the medication at the beginning of an acute respiratory viral infection or who had a severe illness. In the reviews, they indicate that when using the medicine at the very beginning of the disease, it is possible to shorten the recovery time.

Patients in whom the flu, acute respiratory viral infection, acute respiratory infections, or colds were severe, noted that with Arbidol treatment, the severity of symptoms is reduced, due to this there is an improvement in overall health. Those people who took it for prophylaxis during the period of seasonal influenza epidemics or after contact with sick people were satisfied with the effect of treatment with the medication.

Most experts on the children's version of the drug respond positively, indicating that the appointment of the drug helps to accelerate the patient’s recovery process.

Negative reviews about the medication are due to high expectations of patients from the use of the drug, given its high cost and the likelihood of an allergic reaction in the child during antiviral therapy or preventive treatment.

Reviews of experts indicate that during treatment it is important to strictly adhere to the prescribed scheme.

RECEPTION SCHEMES For children

INFLUENZA AND ARVI IN CHILDREN Causes and methods of treatment

The World Health Organization decided to include the drug Umifenovir (Arbidol) in the class of antiviral drugs of the international system of classification of drugs - Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System.

Justification of the mechanism of antiviral action, data on the pharmacological properties, evidence base, safety of use and therapeutic efficacy of the active substance of the drug Arbidol were presented in 2013 to the court of the working group on the methodology of drug statistics of the WHO collaborating center in Oslo (Norway).

The credibility of the evidence of the mechanism of the antiviral effect and the evidence base of umifenovir (Arbidol) were consistent with WHO requirements, which served as the basis for the assignment of the international ATX code as a direct-acting antiviral drug (J05A - Direct acting antivirals).

The recognition by experts of the WHO of umifenovir as a drug with a direct antiviral effect is an important step in the development of the Arbidol drug and gives doctors an additional opportunity for a science-based approach to the choice of drugs for the treatment and prevention of viral infections.

Arbidol is a simple and proven way to reduce the risk of getting the flu or a cold.

What is the drug released

Pharmacists produce the drug in several forms. This is done for the convenience of taking the drug by different age groups of patients. For each type of medicine, Arbidol instructions for children are attached.

  • The medicine in capsules - suitable for adults and adolescents from 12 years. If children of primary school age can swallow a capsule, then there are no contraindications for admission. Capsules are available in two dosages - 50 mg and 100 mg. Inside the gelatin shell is a powder mixed with granules. The hue ranges from whitish to cream. In one cell, Arbidol 100 or 50 can be 5 or 10 capsules.
  • Tableted drug - produced in a dosage of 50 mg. Arbidol according to the description and composition is no different from capsules. The tablet is round and biconvex in shape, it is white or white-cream in color. If it is broken into two parts, then a white mass with greenish or yellowish inclusions will be visible. The disadvantage of tablets is that they can not be crushed into powder, cracked or chewed. Like capsules, they are swallowed whole, washed down with plenty of water. In one cell, 10 tablets.
  • Powder - a suspension for babies is prepared from this form. 5 milliliters of the finished solution contains 25 mg of active substance. The powder is sold in a dark and glass bottle. To prepare the syrup, pour water, shake the drug well. After the medicine is ready for use.Complete with a powder is a measuring spoon. The drug is also called Arbidol Children's, but this is its unofficial name. Suspension is sometimes called drops or syrup in everyday life.

Attention! On sale there is a medicine in a dosage of 200 mg. This medication is for adults only. Available only in capsules. Officially called "Arbidol Maximum."

Children's Arbidol - instructions for use of suspension and tablets, dosage, analogs and price

All mothers want their child not to get sick. However, their attitude to treatment and drugs is radically different. If some begin to immediately give the child known remedies when the first symptoms appear, then others are cautious and try to delay taking medications for as long as possible. Both approaches are wrong. You need to understand which drug, how much and how to take. This also applies to the immunostimulating, antiviral drug Arbidol.

Should I pay attention to reviews

If you are interested in this question, then you have already answered it. Of course, if you doubt the safety of Arbidol or its benefits, you simply will not succeed in ignoring the reviews. Especially when it comes to treating a child. Another thing is how to respond to them.

Use common sense: reviews can not characterize the drug, for this there is an annotation.

Often you can read reviews about children's Arbidol, according to which the medicine was completely ineffective. It is possible that the reviews are sincere: most likely in this case, Arbidol for children was used not according to indications.

Sometimes children's Arbidol turns people's opinions into a real nightmare: for example, you can find allegations that taking the medicine caused serious allergic reactions, etc. This is not excluded, however, such cases are most likely caused by improper and uncontrolled use of the drug.

Therefore, despite the fact that Arbidol can be purchased in pharmacies without a prescription, only a pediatrician or a children's infectious disease specialist should decide whether to drink this medicine for a child with ARVI.

Composition and effect on the body

The drug "Arbidol" is available in two forms:

  1. Tablets or capsules. They come in several options, depending on the dosage of the active substance, namely 50, 100 and 200 mg. They are white or cream sachets. They come in cardboard packaging of 10, 20, 30 or 40 pieces, packaged in blisters.
  2. Powder. It is intended for the preparation of a suspension (syrup) containing 25 mg of the active ingredient in 5 ml and has the appearance of a granular powder with a white or cream color, a pleasant aroma of fruits is characteristic. Its packaging is a 125 ml dark glass container with a 100 ml mark on it, it has a special lid that protects children from opening the medicine. Together with it comes with a measuring spoon and instructions for use. After preparation, the suspension takes on a yellow-white hue with the smell of cherries or bananas.

The composition of both forms is almost the same. The active substance is umifenovir hydrochloride. Differences appear in the list of auxiliary components. Among the additional components in the tablets are present:

The suspension contains:

  • Na benzoate,
  • Na chloride
  • maltodextrin
  • titanium dioxide,
  • sucrose
  • colloidal sodium dioxide,
  • starch,
  • sucralose,
  • flavors of cherry or banana.

"Arbidol" for children is an antiviral drug that provides the production of interferon, a protein that is synthesized when viruses enter the body to destroy them, and contributes to the development of infection resistance in healthy cells. The result of taking "Arbidol" is:

  • reduction in the frequency of viral diseases,
  • normalization of immunological parameters,
  • a decrease in the severity of symptoms in acute respiratory infections, acute respiratory viral infections, or influenza,
  • reduction in the duration of fever and disease,
  • decrease in the degree of intoxication of the body.

Alternative medicines

In the presence of contraindications, the child is given drugs with a similar therapeutic effect. Popular analogues of Arbidol for children:

  • Ingavirin helps fight flu viruses (type A, B). This medicine is more effective than Arbidol, but it has more side effects, so you need to get the approval of a pediatrician before using it.
  • Kagocel is used for the prevention and treatment of viral infections. It stimulates the production of interferon and helps the body fight pathogenic agents. Designed for children over 3 years old.
  • Aflubin is another analog of Arbidol, which provokes the synthesis of interferon. After taking the drug, swelling of the mucosa decreases, sputum excretion is accelerated, the temperature normalizes, and the body is cleansed of toxins. For patients up to 12 months, a suspension is used.
  • Remantadine does not strengthen the immune system, but copes with viruses very well. The medication is contraindicated in children with liver failure and patients younger than 12 months.
  • Anaferon is a homeopathic medicine for the prevention, treatment of flu and colds. With regular use, the likelihood of dangerous complications (bronchitis, pneumonia) decreases.
  • Immunal enhances immunity, prevents viral diseases, accelerates recovery in the presence of infection. The drug is contraindicated only for allergies to its components. Suitable for patients up to 12 months.

Thus, Arbidol for children is an effective, and subject to the rules of treatment, safe drug. Before using it, consult with a pediatrician who will select the treatment regimen and dosage. If a child has had side effects after taking Arbidol, then discard it and consult a doctor.

  • disturbances in the work of the cardiovascular system.

Historical reference

The first studies of Arbidol were carried out in the seventies of the last century, but their data for an unknown reason are still classified. The active substance was approved for medical use in 1988 in the USSR, got into mass production in 1992, but became widely known under the name Arbidol in the two thousandth. The outbreak of swine flu in 2009 caused a real panic among the population, there were the most incredible rumors of hundreds of daily deaths and crowded morgues. Against this backdrop, with the widely advertised efficacy of Arbidol against swine flu, the drug has become incredibly popular.

Initially, the effect of the drug was declared as immunomodulating (stimulating the production of interferons), now the instructions for use indicate that the drug has a direct antiviral effect.

However, this fact in itself does not contain anything strange: clarifying the principle of action and even changes in the indications for the use of medicines is a frequent phenomenon. To recall at least a well-known drug that was developed as a treatment for angina pectoris, became known as the first drug for the correction of erectile dysfunction, and is now successfully used for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.

With SARS and flu

Late autumn and early spring - a time when a person easily develops the flu or SARS. Runny nose, cough, fever and other unpleasant sensations drive people to the nearest pharmacy stalls. In addition, medical literature warns that the flu often causes complications (for example, asthma attacks, pneumonia, otitis media, meningitis), so it cannot be left without adequate treatment.

Before buying, patients often browse the Internet to see reviews from those already treated with Arbidol. Some comments demotivate potential buyers. “After treatment of the common cold with Arbidol, she began to doubt the effectiveness of antiviral drugs!”, The woman who did not help was indignant. Another woman praises the medicine: "But Arbidol helps me!" Users about the drug. They note that the remedy "supports the immune system," they write that "Arbidol gives an improvement in well-being with a cold almost immediately." Other patients are unhappy that they bought a "useless remedy." In the entire history of mankind, one medicine did not become a panacea, and Arbidol helps only if it is used correctly and there are no contraindications. If a person thinks about treatment with Arbidol, but doubts because of negative reviews on the Internet and is not sure that he will tolerate the drug well, you need to entrust the choice of treatment to the therapist.

Lost Resolution

Not so long ago, Russian-language media and social networks made noise about the Memorandum on the pseudoscience of homeopathy, which was developed by the Commission on the fight against pseudoscience and falsification of scientific research under the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its authors ask the Ministry of Health to “review, in the light of relevant scientific evidence, decisions taken more than 20 years ago to introduce homeopathy into the Russian health care system” and to “withdraw homeopathic medicines from medical use in state and municipal medical institutions”. Facebook disputes revealed many hidden lovers of homeopathy and quarreled with many good friends.

However, few people remember that ten years ago, in March 2007, a similar document was drawn up at the Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS). The resolution of the meeting of the Presidium of the Formulary Committee of the RAMS dated March 16, 2007 stated: “The Formulary Committee of the RAMS, supporting the need for urgent measures taken by the Government of the Russian Federation to normalize the situation with the drug supply of the population of the country, and recognizing its involvement in the problem of drug supply, suggests:

Arbidol tablets

  • closing the bottle, you need to shake it until a homogeneous mass is formed,
  • add water to 100 ml mark,
  • shake again.

The suspension is used before meals and before each meal it needs to be shaken for about 5 - 7 seconds to get a homogeneous mass. The dose and period of use are determined by age and purpose - for treatment or prevention. The following are the doses of the drug for different age groups:

  • 2 - 6 years: 2 scoops, which corresponds to 10 ml per 50 mg,
  • 6 to 12 years: 4 scoops, corresponding to 20 ml per 100 mg,
  • over 12 years: 8 scoops, 40 ml per 200 mg.

For the prevention of influenza or during an epidemic of viral infections, the suspension is given twice a week in a single dosage for a month and a half. If there is contact of the child with the infected, "Arbidol" should be taken once a day in the appropriate single dose for 2 weeks. When treating from the very onset of symptoms, the drug is taken 5 days with an interval between doses of 6 hours.

Feasible side effects

"Arbidol" is considered a safe drug for children, it is easily tolerated. In rare cases, if you violate the rules of use, dosage or storage, a medicine can provoke a number of side effects. The most common allergic reaction to one or more components in the composition of the drug. A similar answer appears in the form:

This is rare and, as a rule, in people with hypersensitivity. In case of an overdose, cases of which have not yet been reported, symptoms may not be observed. No other side effects of the drug for the long term of its operation by pediatricians and other specialists have been identified.

Arbidol Children's - an antiviral agent that specifically suppresses in vitro influenza A and B viruses (Influenzavirus A, B), including the highly pathogenic subtypes A (H1N1) pdm09 and A (H5N1), as well as other ARVI pathogens (coronavirus) associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), rhinovirus (Rhinovirus), adenovirus (Adenovirus), respiratory syncytial virus (Pneumovirus) and parainfluenza virus (Paramyxovirus)). According to the mechanism of antiviral action, it belongs to fusion (fusion) inhibitors, interacts with the hemagglutinin of the virus and prevents the fusion of the lipid membrane of the virus and cell membranes. It has interferon-inducing activity - in a study on mice, the induction of interferons was observed after 16 hours, and high titers of interferons remained in the blood until 48 hours after administration. Stimulates cellular and humoral immune responses: increases the number of lymphocytes in the blood, especially T-cells (CD3), increases the number of T-helpers (CD4), without affecting the level of T-suppressors (CD8), normalizes the immunoregulatory index, stimulates the phagocytic function of macrophages and increases the number of natural killer cells (NK cells).
Therapeutic efficacy in viral infections is manifested in a decrease in the duration and severity of the course of the disease and its main symptoms, as well as in a decrease in the frequency of development of complications associated with a viral infection and exacerbations of chronic bacterial diseases.
Refers to low-toxic drugs (LD50> 4 g / kg). It does not have any negative effect on the human body when administered orally in recommended doses. Pharmacokinetics It is rapidly absorbed and distributed to organs and tissues. The maximum plasma concentration when taking the drug at a dose of 200 mg of umifenovir is reached after 1 hour, the distribution volume (Vd) is 1432 liters. Metabolized in the liver. The elimination half-life averages 11 hours.About 40% is excreted unchanged, mainly with bile (38.9%) and, in an insignificant amount, by the kidneys (0.12%). During the first day, 90% of the administered dose is excreted.

Arbidol when feeding is not the best choice!

Useful information: Colds in a child: imperceptible first signs, treatment (what to do), causes. How to avoid mistakes and complications

Often young mothers are interested, Can I drink Arbidol when breastfeeding?

Answer: It is not recommended to use the drug, because with the mother’s milk, the medicine enters the baby’s body.

What is better to drink during breastfeeding and pregnancy if a cold has started?

Answer: It is better not to drink pills at all, but to use drugs that act directly on the nasopharyngeal mucosa.

So, for the treatment of acute respiratory viral infections during pregnancy and feeding, instead of Arbidol, it is better to buy one of the modern safe topical drugs - nasal spray or drops. Such drugs practically do not penetrate the blood of a woman, which means they can not harm the body of the mother and child.

Which is better, Arbidol or Ingavirin?

Ingavirin is a new generation drug, which is not only antiviral, but also anti-inflammatory. Both medicines act directly on pathogens, preventing their reproduction and damage to new, healthy cells, and also stimulate the defenses to produce their own interferon.

Photo of Ingavirin 90 for adults

Ingavirin is effective against many viruses, among which are adeno- and respiratory syncytial viruses, parainfluenza pathogens. Among the shortcomings, a wider list of contraindications can be distinguished, including childhood.

The price for a course of therapy for drugs is almost the same, from which we can conclude that the choice depends on the diagnosis and the presence of contraindications, otherwise the difference between them is small.

Pharmachologic effect

The medicine has pronounced antiviral and moderate immunomodulatory properties. It is effective against viruses A and B, as well as coronavirus. Its therapeutic effect is due to the fact that umifenovir inhibits the process of combining the lipid viral membrane with the cell membranes that make up the body’s tissues.

Arbidol also enhances the immune response, increasing the body's resistance to viral etiology infections. Its use significantly reduces the likelihood of complications and exacerbations of chronic diseases provoked by a bacterial infection.

During the active phase of the disease, the drug reduces the severity of intoxication caused by pathological processes and accelerates the onset of recovery. The drug has low toxicity and does not have a pronounced negative effect on the human body.

In the digestive tract, it is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and disperses throughout all body systems. Its greatest content in the blood is observed after 1.2-1.5 hours from the time of use. In the liver, it undergoes partial metabolism. About 40% of it remains in its original state and is excreted almost entirely along with bile, only a small fraction is excreted by the kidneys. About 90% of the dose taken leaves the body within 24 hours.

Prevention by folk methods

Folk methods for the prevention of influenza and SARS are very diverse: this is aromatherapy, the use of herbal decoctions, infusions, teas, the use of foods that are rich in vitamins, the use of garlic, onions, nuts and propolis, and an active lifestyle.

There are some herbs that have long been used in traditional medicine, but you should consult your doctor before using them, because there may also be contraindications to the use of medicinal herbs.

Activate the immune system help: Ginseng, Echinacea, Chamomile, Aloe, Rosehip, Ginger, Licorice, Eleutherococcus, Radiola rosea. Many of these herbs are sold in pharmacies in collections for immunity, they can be purchased and brewed.

Vitamin products for immunity, sea buckthorn, pumpkin, broccoli, citrus fruits, persimmons, mountain ash, wheat sprouts, avocados, parsley, sweet cherries, grapes, carrots, and tomatoes are very useful, especially in the cold season.

Description of the drug

Arbidol is an antiviral drug that supports and stimulates the immune system. It can be used both for preventive purposes and for the treatment of colds.

The use of Arbidol in conjunction with antibiotics is allowed, since antibiotics fight bacteria and Arbidol fight viruses. It is not recommended to take this drug with alcohol, since the drug enhances the effect of alcohol on the body and can lead to poisoning. In addition, alcohol significantly reduces the effectiveness of the drug.

Arbidol is available in two forms - capsules and tablets. In both cases, the active substance content is 50 or 100 mg.

What helps the reception of "Arbidol"?

Among the indications for use there is an extensive group of colds of the upper respiratory tract, presumably caused by adenoviruses and respiratory pathogens from this group. What Arbidol helps with its proper use should be analyzed in more detail, since many patients believe that the principle of the drug’s action is similar to the work of antibiotics. It's not like that at all.

Reception of "Arbidol" in accordance with the recommendations of the doctor activates the internal reserves of the body, guarding special cells triggers to fight against viral microflora.

It happens as follows:

  1. in the cavity of the small intestine, where the gelatin capsule dissolves, granules of the active substance are released,
  2. primary contact with ciliary epithelium gives activation of humoral cellular immunity,
  3. then the drug is absorbed into the bloodstream, transported to bone marrow structures,
  4. here begins the activation of the production of T-lymphocytes, helper cells (hunters) and macrophages that can release the affected cells of the body from viruses that have settled in them,
  5. the last phase of antiviral activity is observed when the active substance passes through hepatocytes, a secondary complex of immune defense is formed here, which prevents the reintroduction of the inactivated virus into the bloodstream.

If you understand this mechanism of action, it will become clear that taking Arbidol can be effective only if the body is prepared in advance for a meeting with an invisible microscopic enemy. Therefore, it is important to begin treatment at the time the first signs of infection appear, preferably at the prodromal stage.

Can I take during pregnancy

In the instructions of Arbidol, with great care and only for clinical indications, it is recommended that this drug be used by pregnant women.

It is worth noting that the common cold during pregnancy is a frequent occurrence. However, given that the medicine actually does not provide a preventive effect, but only facilitates the course of acute respiratory viral infections, there are not so many benefits from Arbidol during pregnancy: the infection will still make itself felt.

And therefore, although pregnancy as such for the drug Arbidol is not a contraindication, it is better to forget about these pills while carrying a child.

True, sometimes the drug is still prescribed for pregnant women. This applies to cases when it is reliably established that the cause of acute respiratory viral infections is influenza, especially its most dangerous type A for the developing fetus (subtypes H1N1, H5N1). In these cases, Arbidol is really necessary.

Remantadine or Arbidol, which is better?

Remantadine is an antiviral drug that is effective against seasonal viral infections, including encephalitis, but not able to cope with the complications of these pathologies - bronchitis, pneumonia and others. It acts exclusively on viral cells, without stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies to pathogens.

It has remantadine and significant contraindications - pathology of the liver and kidneys, endocrine disorders, but is allowed in pediatrics, starting from 7 years. The average cost of packaging is 120 rubles, which is several times lower than Arbidol Maximum.

How effective is Arbidol?

Despite powerful marketing, the use of Arbidol is still controversial. A number of experts claim that the drug does not help at all with the flu and other infections. Others, on the contrary, claim to be highly effective in seasonal epidemics.

The manufacturer on its website refers to numerous studies conducted in Russia and China, in which the antiviral effect of umifenovir is allegedly proven. However, in 2010, at the peak of the epidemic of influenza A (H1N1), known as swine, the World Health Organization issued a guide that pointed to the unproven effectiveness of Arbidol. WHO experts noted the lack of transparent data on research methods, which contradicts the principles of evidence-based medicine accepted in the world.

In 2012, Russia began a study of the effectiveness of Arbidol, conducted according to all the rules (double, blind, randomized, placebo-controlled). Preliminary data show a significant improvement in the course of influenza in people taking umifenovir. However, the study is funded by the manufacturer itself, which means it can hardly be called unbiased. In addition, there are some errors in its design that can seriously affect the outcome.

All clinical studies referenced by the manufacturer - Pharmstandard, were conducted only by Russian scientists. The international community has been very cautious about Arbidol, believing that its effectiveness has not been proven. Currently, independent of Pharmstandard, European researchers have conducted only a few in vitro (in vitro) studies, which, unfortunately, cannot serve as evidence that Arbidol helps people.

The benefits of the antiviral drug Arbidol

Arbidol compares favorably with its analogues with a wide spectrum of antiviral activity: it fights not only with influenza A and B viruses, but also with highly pathogenic subtypes - “pig” A (H1N1) and “bird” A (H5N1), as well as other viruses that cause to ARVI. The drug has a direct effect directly on viruses, inhibiting their reproduction in the body, as a result of which the virus cannot gain a foothold in the body and infection does not occur.

The action of the drug begins an hour later, with a little after taking the first pill and is effective at all stages of the disease. Therefore, you can drink Arbidol even 2-3 days after the onset of symptoms.

It has been clinically proven that Arbidol reduces the duration of influenza by 2 days, and also reduces the intoxication and catarrhal symptoms that accompany the disease. In addition, it significantly reduces the likelihood of complications after influenza and SARS.

The effectiveness of Arbidol is confirmed by double randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials, therefore it is recommended by the Scientific Research Institute for the treatment and prevention of influenza and SARS in adults and children. In addition, Arbidol is included in the Anatomical-therapeutic-chemical classification of the World Health Organization - in the class of direct-acting antiviral drugs.

Arbidol has a moderate immunomodulating effect, it not only increases resistance to viral infections, but also has an antioxidant effect. The drug has a direct antiviral effect. Numerous studies have shown that taking Arbidol in order to prevent the flu epidemic and SARS during the season, as well as in contact with a sick person, reduces the likelihood of contracting these diseases.

Side effects

Sometimes a child’s body reacts to Arbidol with allergic reactions such as hives, skin rashes, Quincke’s edema, or skin itching. Anaphylactic reaction to the suspension is very rare.

Instructions for use and dosage

The suspension is taken before meals. To prepare the medicine, about 30 ml of water is added to the powder or the bottle is filled with water to 2/3 of its volume. The water for the preparation of the solution should be brought to a boil, and then cooled. During mixing with the powder, it should have room temperature. After pouring water inside and closing the bottle with a lid, you need to turn the bottle over, and then shake it thoroughly several times to make the medicine homogeneous.

Having added still boiled water into the bottle to the mark, which corresponds to 100 ml of liquid, the bottle is again closed and re-shaken. Thorough agitation of the suspension is required before each dose, so that the syrup taken is uniform. For dosing, it is recommended to use a measuring spoon, which the manufacturer attaches to the bottle.

A single dosage for a child is determined depending on his age:

  • Children 2-6 years old are given 10 ml of medication at a time, which corresponds to 50 mg of umifenovir.
  • A child aged six to 12 years old requires 100 mg of the active substance at a time, so he is given 20 ml of suspension.
  • A child over 12 years old should drink 40 ml of the drug, that is, at one time he will receive 200 mg of umifenovir. Since at this age you need to immediately swallow 8 measured spoons of the medicine, it is better to switch to taking solid forms with a higher dosage.

The mode of administration of the suspension depends on the purpose for which the medicine is taken:

  • If the drug is prescribed for prevention during the season of acute respiratory viral infections, then it should be given to the child 3 weeks twice a day.
  • If the baby was in contact with a person who has the flu or other SARS, the suspension is prescribed in a course of 10-14 days. In this case, the drug should be drunk only once a day.
  • With influenza or other viral infections of the respiratory tract, if there are no complications, the medicine is taken every six hours. Such a four-time intake is prescribed for 5 days.
  • When infected with rotavirus, a child over 2 years old is also given the drug four times a day, for five days.
  • In order to prevent a child over 6 years of age, SARS suspension is given once a day in a course of 12 to 14 days. To treat such an acute pathology in a child over 12 years of age, a double dose of Arbidol is prescribed, and the duration of therapy is from 8 to 10 days.

If the child has missed taking the medicine, you need to take the missed dose of the suspension immediately, as it was discovered. Further treatment is continued according to the scheme prescribed by the doctor.

Available in blister plates laid in a cardboard box. In the box is from 10 to 30 tablets.

Available in packs of 10, 20, 30, 40 pieces.Since capsules cannot be chewed, this form is not suitable for children under 3 years old. For children under the specified age, it is ideal to use a suspension.

The main active substance of Arbidol is umifenovir hydrochloride. For each form, additional substances are used:

  • hypermelosis
  • titanium dioxide
  • potato starch,
  • polysorbate80,
  • microcrystalline cellulose
  • sodium benzoate
  • sodium chloride,
  • sucrose
  • flavors
  • maltodextrin

Indications for use

According to the instructions, the drug is taken in the following cases:

  • type A and B flu
  • acute respiratory viral infection, accompanied by acute course and complications,
  • deficiency of the immune system (immunodeficiency),
  • viral infections, including viral pneumonia, bronchitis,
  • Chronical bronchitis,

The main indications for the use of tablets or suspensions of Arbidol are ARVI, ARI, and flu. When the temperature rises to 38-40 degrees, it is necessary to begin treatment as soon as possible. The drug is most effective in the first 2 days from the onset of symptoms.

Medical workers of preschool and school institutions are advised to give the drug Arbidol as a prophylaxis: it will help children stay healthy during the period of mass infection. This point of view has no scientific basis, therefore, the causeless use of the drug is inappropriate.

Arbidol is advisable to take in the season of colds to those children who regularly visit places with a large crowd of people (kindergartens, schools and various circles)

Instructions for use for children with dosages by age

Like any medicine, Arbidol is taken after consultation with your doctor and a thorough familiarization with the instructions. The drug has an age limit (tablets and capsules), the dosage is selected individually. Regardless of the form of the drug, take it 20-25 minutes before a meal with a little water. It is recommended to give the drug at regular intervals and strictly by the hour. So the effectiveness of Arbidol will be slightly higher.

A baby suspension with a banana or cherry flavor is prepared according to the following algorithm:

  1. pre-boil water, cool,
  2. add 30 ml of boiled warm water to the powder bottle,
  3. closing the lid of the vial, mix the contents thoroughly until homogeneous,
  4. add another 100 ml of water to the line marked on the container and shake well,
  5. before each dose, the medicine is shaken until a uniform consistency is formed.

The antiviral drug must be taken strictly according to the instructions

There are special rules that determine at what age to give the drug, for which diseases. They are reflected in the table:

The elimination half-life averages 11 hours. About 40% is excreted unchanged, mainly with bile (38.9%) and, in a small amount, by the kidneys (0.12%). During the first day, 90% of the administered dose is excreted.
