Comfrey officinalis, or Zhivokost

Comfrey was mentioned back in the 10th century in the famous medical poem by the French scientist and doctor Odo from Men, "On the properties of herbs":

“The root, which was perfectly boiled in hot plums, mixed with honey, also heals fractures and tears ... If someone doubts that there is so much strength in the comfrey, even if he prepares the crushed roots with boiled meat ... You will help the broken bones or crushed bones with medicine. If comfrey and pepper and honey are drunk when mixed with wine, then tears and wounds are treated with this application. The bone that has broken is held together by grass with ointment in the fat. ”

Comfrey (Symphytum) is a genus of perennial forest herbaceous plants of the Boraginaceae family, distributed throughout Europe from western Asia to the British Isles. The genus includes about 7 species.

So, in Latin comfrey is called Symphytum - fused, because the underground parts of the plant have long been used as a remedy for bone fractures. In the literature in Russian, other names of the plant are found: bones, Vis-grass, sebaceous root, larkspur, cucumber grass.

As a fodder plant comfrey began to be grown in Russia at the beginning of the 19th century. And at the end of the 19th century, comfrey was actively carried away in many Russian farms, especially in those that were conducted according to the English model. Much has been written about comfrey in agricultural journals of the time.

In old abandoned estates, even now you can find comfrey with blue flowers, planted at the end of the XIX century, but already run wild. In the USSR, work with comfrey as a forage crop was started in the 30s. The starting material for the work was samples from the collection of the All-Union Institute of Plant Production, obtained from England and called hard comfrey.

This comfrey is characterized by high productivity, winter hardiness, grows well after mowing. The crop of green mass in different areas of cultivation can be from 300 to 1000 centners per hectare. Green mass is characterized by a high content of protein, vitamins and other beneficial substances.

Comfrey can be used as a green food, and for the preparation of silage, grass meal and liquid fertilizer. It can grow in one place for more than 10 years without compromising productivity.

It seems to us expedient to dwell in more detail on comfrey. We make a reservation that all information about the healing properties of comfrey and its use is not random, but taken from sources approved by medical scientists.

History of Comfrey

Comfrey has long been known as a medicine that promotes bone fusion in the event of fractures. It is already mentioned in ancient Greek books - both the founder of botany Theofrast and the doctor Dioscorides wrote about comfrey. Ancient Roman soldiers used comfrey to treat wounds and abscesses. Avicenna talks about comfrey in his famous work - “The Canon of Medicine”.

In Europe, all healers also appreciated the medicinal properties of comfrey. It continued to be used as a powerful tool for recovery from fractures, healing of wounds and various injuries. Comfrey is mentioned in the writings of the doctor and the alchemist Paracelsus, and its properties to heal, relieve inflammation and accelerate regeneration are described in almost all popular herbalists of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Cultivation of comfrey begins - the monks at the monasteries engaged in agriculture, plant whole beds of comfrey to use its raw materials for treatment. In the 17th century, comfrey was planted for further harvesting in Russia in “pharmacy gardens”.

It should be noted that although comfrey can be cultivated, it is considered rather like a weed by ordinary gardeners - it spreads quickly and is quite difficult to get rid of because of its powerful long root. In the Soviet Union, comfrey was grown as a forage crop rich in protein and other valuable nutrients.

At the beginning of the 20th century, comfrey is actively studied by medical science; publications in authoritative specialized publications are devoted to it. Researchers have proven the regenerative properties of the plant, as well as its antiulcer effect.

Comfrey-based medicines have been proven to be effective in clinical trials. Later, however, official medicine limited the internal use of comfrey, mainly it began to be used externally, due to the fact that the plant contains some poisonous compounds.

Comfrey is widely used as part of cosmetics, in dental rinses to treat periodontal disease, etc. In dermatology, comfrey-based creams are a good remedy for acne, and ointments are also used to treat other skin diseases. External medicines containing comfrey can be found in pharmacies.

In folk medicine, comfrey was used not only as a remedy for fractures, but also as a medicine for tuberculosis, as well as for stomach ulcers. In the broth of comfrey root, children bathed, and comfrey juice was given to prevent colds and strengthen immunity. As an external remedy, comfrey was used in the form of grindings for multiple sclerosis, as lotions for frostbite and burns.

Currently comfrey retains its popularity with herbalists and phytotherapists. Decoctions of comfrey in milk are considered a good remedy for the treatment of colds and diseases of the respiratory system. With diarrhea, comfrey has an astringent effect. Comfrey is commonly used for bone fusion and tissue regeneration.

Traditional Bulgarian medicine uses comfrey to treat wounds, mastopathy, and inflammation in the mouth and throat. German herbalists prescribe comfrey for the treatment of diseases of the stomach and intestines, hemorrhoids, as an antifungal agent, as well as to stop bleeding. Comfrey tinctures are considered an excellent cure for radiculitis pain. In African countries, comfrey is considered a contraceptive.

In homeopathic practice, comfrey, in addition to bone splicing, is used in cases of gastrointestinal tract diseases, paralysis, and tooth injuries.

The roots of the stomach are alkaloids and adversely affect the liver. Therefore, for internal use, the dosage must be carefully observed.

  • For external treatment of joints with comfrey, ointment is often used. The crushed root is mixed with internal pork fat in a ratio of 1: 4. The ointment is stored in a refrigerator, heated at room temperature before use, and after application, the joints are wrapped with a warm cloth.
  • With varicose veins, bruises, as well as for the treatment of hernia of the spine, the external use of comfrey ointment is combined with its use inside. On the basis of such tincture of comfrey, in pharmacology, body balms are prepared from the gastrocnemius with 10% dimexide, with tea tree oil, snake or bee venom. All of these components are added to achieve a warming effect. Body balm (gingerbread with bee venom) improves blood supply and nutrition of cells, restores bone and cartilage tissue, has analgesic and immunocorrective effects.

Comfrey (Gallbladder) balm with bee venom is best alternated with other rubbing and massage. For example, in the morning do rubbing joints with comfrey with saberfoot, rub balm from the stomach bone in the afternoon, and honey massage in the evening. Honey wraps or massage have a very soft warming effect, contribute to the deep penetration of healing components into the skin and muscle tissue, so this combination and alternation with other drugs is most effective.

In the treatment of joints, ointment and comfrey tincture are used

Joint diseases are most often diagnosed in the stage of chronic inflammation, when inflammatory-dystrophic changes of varying degrees are present. And these significant structural violations are reversible, but for this we need to make a lot of effort and time. It is important to accurately implement the treatment plan and responsibly approach a long rehabilitation period. Since, in this period, regeneration of the bone-cartilaginous structures of the joint and the restoration of partially or completely lost function take place.

The recovery period includes a large number of different techniques and methods: physiotherapeutic methods, reflexology and segment massage, physiotherapy exercises and spa treatment. And during the use and application of all methods of treatment and reparation, the application of the whole variety of alternative medicine methods is always justified.

The components are placed in a refractory container, mixed in a one to four proportion, and placed in the oven for half an hour. After the product has been rinsed, it is poured into cans and put into the refrigerator.

  2. If harvesting comfrey is not difficult (no need to go to the “other end of the world” to stock up on them).
  3. If for treatment you need a remedy that is not in the pharmacy (for example, infusion, decoction, less or more concentrated tincture, ointment).

  • cleaned, washed, cut into rings (transversely) or in long lengths that are cut lengthwise again (into 2 halves),
  • wither in the sun or in a draft,
  • then finally dried in the oven (at a temperature not exceeding 60 degrees),
  • stored in tightly closed glass containers (comfrey retains useful qualities for no more than 1 year).

Since all parts of comfrey contain substances toxic to humans (alkaloids), there are several rules that must be followed when preparing and using plant products:

  • weigh vegetable raw materials before cooking,
  • do not increase the amount of raw materials, a concentrated product is more likely to cause unpleasant side effects,
  • do not increase dosage.

If the recipe says 35 drops, take just as much, or even better, a little less, gradually increasing to the right amount.

Larkspur in milk

Surprisingly, after the first use of the tincture, the pain became much less. I began to sleep until the morning. The hand hurts less even after stresses on it. Precautionary measures

Larkspur refers to those medicinal plants that must be used with special care for treatment. Alkaloids of the pyrrolisidine series (cinoglossin, lisiocarpine and consolididine) are dangerous components in the composition of the stomach bone and the main reason for the presence of contraindications in this plant.

These compounds are poisonous and can cause paralysis of the central nervous system, disrupting the transmission of impulses from the nerve node to the striated muscle.

At the end of the 20th century, the carcinogenic, mutational and toxic properties of alkaloids were identified experimentally in Germany, leading to cancer, gene mutations and toxic hepatitis. This discovery identified contraindications in the use of comfrey for oral administration and sharply narrowed the scope of its application in the framework of official medicine.

In addition to the beneficial properties, comfrey also has contraindications, which is due to the content in almost all parts of the plant of potent toxic alkaloids - cinoglossin, laziocarpine and consolidin. It is these three substances that have the most negative effect on the human body, while causing numerous side effects.

They are so toxic that they can lead to paralysis of the human central nervous system. This is due to the fact that these substances to some extent block the ganglia, which leads to impaired conduction of impulses to the striated muscles. Long-term use of comfrey can cause a person to lose appetite, lethargy, and diarrhea.

Undoubtedly, all experiments with this plant were carried out on animals, therefore, after a certain time of its use, comfrey in animals noted - atony of the stomach, accumulation of mucous-bloody masses in the intestinal cavity, ascites, hemorrhagic foci, necrosis, fatty degeneration, as well as cirrhosis of the liver parenchyma.

As for people, with prolonged use of decoction of comfrey leaves, fresh thrombosis of the central veins was noted. Also, the use of this plant can cause the appearance of a malignant tumor of the liver and bladder.

Experimental studies conducted on animals have also shown that comfrey drugs lower blood pressure, cause strong respiratory arousal, increase tone and increase muscle contraction of the intestines and uterus.

Means from the livestock are absolutely contraindicated in the case of:

  • pregnancy
  • lactation
  • allergies to the plant,
  • hypotension.

Western medicine recommends avoiding its ingestion and does not use comfrey extracts to prepare drugs.Pregnant women are not allowed to take comfrey because of the powerful action that stimulates the uterine muscles.

In case of plant poisoning, you need to rinse the stomach with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, take a laxative and drugs that support breathing and blood circulation.

Before starting the use of drugs from comfrey, especially inside, you need to consult a doctor.
